She
was born on the 10th of August 1933 at Dergaon
district. Her father, late Maneswar Barthakur along with his
three brothers went and settled permanently at Golaghat. Her
childhood was spent at Golaghat where she completed her
primary education from the Golaghat Girls’ Mission School.
Her family had deep cultural roots and her father propagated
music in Dacca in those days. So she used to rehearse daily
after studies in the evening. She used to take regular part in
singing and dancing competitions as well as in plays. Besides
she was proficient in playing all the musical instruments like
the tabla, harmonium etc. used by her father. Though she was
an average in studies, she still managed to study till the
sixth standard and used to fetch laurels for her school in the
yearly school games. She was also very much taken in by the
Bible classes held in her school, where she used to score the
highest marks in each test, due to which she was an object of
affection for her school authorities, namely two teachers
Ms.Tait and Ms.Evans. As she hailed from an orthodox Brahmin
family, she was married off early at the age of 13 to
Mr.Jatindra Prasad Kataki, who also hailed from a prestigious
family of Sivasagar and was a renowned actor of his time. In
1945, she shifted base to Guwahati, where her husband was an
employee of the Assam Tribune. She started acting in dramas
conducted during the “vishwakarma puja” celebrated in the
premises of Assam Tribune. Fatima Bibi’s Ghar, Karaingar
Ligiri, Maa, Magribor Azaan, etc. were some of her stage
dramas. She has not done many movies but has acted in not less
than 20 of them . Ajoli Nobou, Shakuntala, Shankar Joseph Ali,
Ashrai, etc. were some of the movies she acted in. Presently
she has been working in some T.V serials. She is also a very
talented writer who has written stories, novels, poetries,
songs, etc. and also published some of them in the newspapers
and magazines. She was also showered with some awards for her
work. Her old age and bad health has not dampened her spirits
till now, as she is still involved in social services.
